Do Your Renovation Right (The First Time!)

Warm, sunny weather means the start of lots of things – including home renovation season. So whether you’ve just bought a new place or want to turn your house into your dream home, step #1 is to pick out fixtures and paint colours.

Or is it?

At Natik, we understand how exciting a fresh coat of paint can be. Paint has the amazing ability to transform a room and give your home the feel you’re looking for. However, many homeowners who are planning on taking on a renovation tend to think about the paint first and all the other stuff (i.e., furniture, layout, design, flooring) last.

Before drawing up your plans you should speak with a professional about the design and style you’re going for with the renovation. It’s important to remember that picking out your paint first or painting first means that you have to plan everything around it (and trust us, this can be hard and lead to an unsuccessful renovation).

Before you pick out your paint or even begin to paint when doing a renovation, here are some things you should think about:

1. Set a budget: Before you start anything set a budget. Once you do this you can start speaking with the professionals who will be involved in your renovation (i.e., painters, home builders, electricians) to get an idea of how much everything will cost, you can go window shopping, and compare prices of the type of furniture you’re looking for. From here you’ll be able to design a renovation that is within your budget but also accomplishes the look you want.

2. Find the right professionals: In order to complete a successful renovation, you need to have the right contractors. Speak with a few or ask friends or family who they have used in the past or for some advice. You want to ensure that you hire contractors who listen, are accountable, and who are known to do great work.

3. Creating the design: Once you have set your budget and decided who you’re hiring, it’s time to move forward with designing the space. When creating your design usually there will be input from everyone involved. It will take a team to decide how the wiring will be installed, the plumbing that needs to be done, how the flooring will be installed, and just about every other logistical detail there is to think about. To make things easier it’s a good idea to either have some visuals of what you want the end result to be or work with an interior designer to ensure you’re on the right track to getting the look you want.

4. Do things in order: There is a specific order of how you (or your contractors) should do things during a renovation. Depending on how extensive your renovation is will alter the order slightly but the main things are to do floors first and paint last.

Renovations should be a very exciting time (if you do things right the first time!). By sticking to a plan you can ensure that your renovation is a success. Remember: painting is the last piece to completing a renovation!
